Unlimited continues added!
Greetings!
After seeing several playthroughs of Fragment over the years, I decided to create an update to help towards making the game more accessible; that change being...
Unlimited continues!
The idea behind Fragment was to create an arcade-like horror experience, you'd play through the game in one sitting with a high score and a time to beat. However for some, the challenge was too high and being sent back to the start would often mark the end of a session. So now, upon your death a new screen comes up giving you the option to either continue as if nothing ever happened, or to try again from the start.
So what's the catch? Upon continuing, you'll lose all Fragments and a minute will be added to your timer. This was done so that casual players can enjoy the game freely, while hardcore players will still have to be cautious of death in order to achieve the highest score or the fastest time. This was also arcade inspired, as arcade games let you continue as often as you want (if you had the quarters) but reset your score to zero.
This change will mean more players will have a chance of seeing the normal and no helmet difficulty modes to the end. The only exception being the one-hit death difficulty mode where continues are turned off entirely (best of luck with that mode). And the chance to continue is entirely optional; before starting the game you have the option to turn continues off.
Other patch notes include:
- Unlimited continues added
- Upon dying, the continue screen appears
- Pressing "Yes" makes you lose all Fragments and adds a minute to your timer.
- Pressing "No" makes you die instantly
- After resurrection, a new voice clip plays stating "Time Added", while the timer turns red for a few seconds.
- Upon dying, the continue screen appears
- During the game over animation, the rest of the screen around Rose goes dark
- Upon starting the game, a new spooky sound plays
- Vsync is turned on to avoid screen tearing
- In the sound select, the "Time added" audio has been added
- Time display in the HUD turned off by default
- This feature was more for those speedrunning, not so much first time players who want to focus on the horror.
- The Select button (also known as the View button) was changed to the modern Xbox design in the HUD
- The monster crawling animation was adjusted
- Tank section can now be skipped by crawling under the tank
- After repeated playthroughs, I thought it would be best to make this part in the armoury room optional.
- In the safe room, the switch that you press before going up the ladder is there at all times, instead of just appearing once you get the statue piece
- Autopsy room has been redesigned
- There was a potential bug with the monsters collision in this area. I decided to rearrange it, while simultaneously make it more visually interesting.
This patch was meant to come out a while back, but because of other duties it was only finished now. Regardless, I hope you have fun with unlimited continues!
